Majozi chats to KZN Wedding DJ
Today I had the opportunity to sit with Nhlanhla Majozi at Duke & Dutchess, a local hangout in Umhlanga & chat to him about his career in the music industry. Majozi is a Durban based musician & probably one of the most humble and down to earth guy whose music is both catchy and contagious. His debut EP Marvelous light, made it to no. 9 overall on the South African iTunes chart and no. 1 in the singer/songwriter category. A few weeks back we had the opportunity of working with Majozi at an event held in Ballito and decided to put up this blog post of Majozi so here it is..
What exactly was it that inspired you to pursue your career? I used to work at the bank as a teller. It was a cool job, but my passion was always music. Luckily for me other people realized this as well, and they encouraged me to pursue it. I never believed it would be possible for me to do music as a career, but through my church and some mates like Dylan Jahnig and Kent Vander Yacht, I was able to study music at UKZN. I gained some confidence and started playing anywhere I could. My career really started when I released my debut EP recorded at Doppler studios in La Lucia, by Warren Meyer. The EP did far better than I ever imagined and I was like, heck lets do this thing!
Tell us about your song “The River” and how that came about? There’s this movie called “O’ Brother where art thou”, and in the movie there’s this scene where people sing a song called “ Down to the river to pray”. I really digged the vibe of the song and the whole idea about the River. So months later I came up with an idea of singing a story about a man and girl in different situations without hope, but they both find hope down by the river.
You’re quite the busy guy..tell us about the past few gigs including last night’s gig held at The Factory Café in Durban? I’m just trying to get better and better. I want people to walk away from my gigs amazed, I’m not there yet, but the support has been great. The Factory café gig was a vibe. Glen Hartmann from Cape Town played and killed it, and it was nice to have a well-supported gig for him. David Daniels also smashed his set. They are both amazingly talented guys and are so awesome to hang out with.
What has been your most memorable moment in your career to date? I’ve had a lot of awesome moments. Its hard to choose one, but I guess opening for Mango Groove at the Botanical gardens is right up there. We played in front of 3500+ -.. It was insane. The people were great and I had the time of my life.
At the beginning of this year, you were featured on Espresso on SABC 3.. tell us more.. That was also one of my best moments. I felt honoured just to be on the show, but they went beyond what I was expecting. They treated me well and made feel special. Really some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Doing a show that early in the morning can’t be easy, but they do it with a big smile and they have fun.
Where can we see you live in the next few months? I will be playing at “Live - The Venue” in Durban on Saturday 19th July. Doors open at 8:30pm or on Sunday at “iwantmycofee” in Umhlanga 20th July from Midday. I look forward to seeing you there.
